The Importance of Aerating Your Lawn

Aerating your lawn every 3-4 years is essential for maintaining healthy grass, especially in compacted soils. This process enhances air, water, and nutrient penetration.

The Importance of Aerating Your Lawn

Aerating your lawn is a crucial maintenance task that should be performed every three to four years. This technique is especially beneficial for compacted, heavy, clay soils that are prone to waterlogging, as these conditions can lead to rapid deterioration of the grass.

Over time, soil compaction occurs, which reduces the air spaces necessary for grass roots to breathe. This lack of oxygen can lead to a condition known as "root asphyxiation," ultimately harming the overall health of your lawn.

The aeration process involves using a machine that punctures the grass and removes small plugs or cylinders of compacted soil. This operation creates holes spaced approximately 10 centimeters apart throughout the lawn, resembling a sieve. These openings allow air, water, fertilizers, and fungicides to penetrate down to the root level, significantly enhancing the grass’s health.

Following aeration, it’s advisable to prepare the lawn for overseeding and topdressing, ensuring a lush and vibrant turf for the growing season.
