Introducing SuperGreen: The Water-Efficient Lawn Solution
In 2024, Pellegrini Giardini is set to transform the gardening landscape with its innovative product, SuperGreen. This new roll-out lawn is designed to require minimal water while maintaining a low environmental impact.
As climate change increasingly affects daily life, Italy is experiencing prolonged droughts interspersed with heavy rainfall, leading to significant damage. The need for responsible water management in gardening has never been more critical, both ethically and due to the limited availability of this essential resource.
Traditional lawns come with a host of challenges. They typically demand substantial amounts of water for lush growth and are vulnerable to fungal diseases when overly moist. Their low density often allows weeds to thrive, and they generally struggle to withstand foot traffic, particularly from pets. Regular fertilization and pest control are also necessary to keep them healthy.
In response to these issues, Pellegrini Giardini has successfully trialed SuperGreen, a new type of warm-season grass. Over the past year, approximately 10,000 square meters of this innovative lawn, derived from a new selection of Australian grass, have been laid. This variety boasts a rich green color and a growth pattern that spreads horizontally, forming a dense and soft carpet instead of growing in vertical clumps.
The dense coverage of SuperGreen translates to remarkable durability against foot traffic, making it a suitable choice for households with pets. Additionally, this lawn minimizes space for weeds, effectively reducing the need for herbicides. Notably, SuperGreen is naturally pollen-free as it does not produce flowers or seeds, providing relief for allergy sufferers.
Water savings with SuperGreen average around 40%, and it retains a vibrant green appearance even with minimal irrigation. Unlike other warm-season grasses on the market, SuperGreen remains active in temperate zones during the winter, thriving in both sunny and partially shaded areas across various soil types.
Its inherent hardiness means that elaborate and expensive fertilization is unnecessary. A few targeted interventions throughout the year are all that is required to keep SuperGreen looking its best.
